It's almost June of 2009, so I'm almost 6 months late here, but I noticed we never made our usual thread listing our favorite movies from the previous year. So feel free to list your top 10 movies from 2008. Here are mine:
10. The Day the Earth Stood Still - I wasn't sure what to think going into this one, but I was pleasantly surprised with the job the filmmakers did with the remake. The movie has it's share of flaws, but has a nice message and is done tastefully.
9. Quantum of Solace - Another exciting Bond movie. I liked Casino Royale a little bit better, but only a little bit.
8. Hellboy II - Another movie that I wasn't expecting to deliver as much as it did. This one was just as much fun as the first one, if not maybe even a little bit more.
7. Wanted - Not exactly a kids movie by any stretch of the means, but definitely a well done adaptation of the graphic novel.
6. The Incredible Hulk - A bit overshadowed by Iron Man and The Dark Knight, but still a great comic book film in its own right. I liked Edward Norton in the lead role, and I would love to see the character on the big screen again in the future.
5. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Most will criticize this film, but I think it did what it set out to do. The film was both fun and nostalgic, and other than a few plot points that I found to be rather bizarre I have no major complaints.
4. 21 - This movie was awesome. Enough said!
3. Cloverfield - A fantastic and intense monster movie from the perspective of the handy cam, much like The Blair Witch Project. Check it out!
2. Iron Man - What a fantastic comic book film. Robert Downy Jr. rocked as Tony Stark! This movie was unfortunate that The Dark Knight came out the same year, because this film would be the best film of just about any other year. Oh well, perhaps the competition won't be so tough when Iron Man 2 comes out. I really can't wait for that one!
1. The Dark Knight - Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that this one tops my list. I was looking forward to this one for years, and believe me, it was worth the wait. Heath Ledger was amazing, Christian "Distracting!" Bale was great, and the rest of the cast was fantastic as well. Christopher Nolan is the greatest director in franchise history, and despite his short list of works, already one of my favorite all-time directors. I can't wait to see a 3rd film in this series.
