Brett,
I saw the film Friday night and it was incredible! I thought the pacing worked very well with tension building and then a place for denouement/resolution with each beat of the storyline. I liked how you handled the many aspects of the movie and how you tied it in with the first two movies. My regret was the length. I wanted more. Perhaps that was your goal? To leave us wanting more. Well, it worked. Now, I need a new trilogy to feel satisfied.
The two flashbacks worked well as an alternate introduction before the titles, and gave much needed information/exposition to help the viewer get drawn into the movie. I was impressed with the special effects to make Professor X and Magneto younger. Well done. Loved the cameos with Stan and Chris. Great moment to have the writer of the X-Men and the writer who worked on the Dark Phoenix Storyline in the comics in Jean's childhood scene.
I liked the difference in the special effects for Jean's Phoenix power. I think it needed to be different from the red flame surges of X-Men 2. She had a bird-like fierceness with that look, and she appeared to consume Scott. Wow. I wasn't put off by the scene ending. It's definitely more creepy to have us guess the details. Nicely done.
You've set up the next trilogy well, with the betrayal between Mystique and Magneto. That will be VERY interesting. A perfect opportunity to bring in Magneto's children as he has to face the humility of humanity. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could "take over" quasi-leadership of the brotherhood, with Mystique running the show, and have Magneto come back to that. Wouldn't that be a pickle? I'd love to see how he'd handle that one.
The effects for Bobby icing up worked very well on screen, I only wanted more of it. Maybe we can see him using ice slides in the next one. If he ices up more, though, he may need to go to all ice, since ice would probably ruin those leather suits they wear. Of course, if there's a cost issue, I'm sure you can work out something. These movies are a bit more of the "X-Men in a real world scenario," anyway. I loved the effects for Colossus, and I was so psyched when Rogue metalled up!! I wish she had done more while "borrowing" Colossus' powers. That's a key with the next trilogy: show us how the mutants have powers that are even greater when combined in the right ways. The fast ball special with Wolverine getting tossed by Colossus was a great way to showcase this idea of teamwork. This is what seperates the X-Men from all other comic book franchises. There is an array of powers, and with a unique combination, you've got great ways to resolve the many problems they face. So, it wasn't so far fetched that six mutants go face the massive forces in the final battle, because we saw it as a way of showing how to use their powers the right way to defeat their opponents.
We definitely need more Colossus, Angel, and Gambit. My theory is that with the cure "wearing off," there will be a resurgence of mutants being rejected from home, and hitting the streets, and with no where to go, they turn to crime. The government continues their slippery slope of this movie, and unleash the sentinels to mop up the streets. Rogue leaves, and crosses paths with Gambit, a street urchin from Louisiana who can be the example for the audience to see what rejection has done to bring about the mutant crime wave. Perhaps they even go consider membership with the Brotherhood??? Wasn't Rogue one of them before?
Then you've got the conflict between the leadership of the brotherhood, betrayal, and Magneto's children. For Charles, he's got a different body, his ex-wife Moira to face, and possibly his son at Muir Island. If that's not enough, he's got to come to terms with how he handled Jean. That's a lot for a dead man to stomach. I'd love to see a team of X-Men fighting say, 3 to 5 sentinels at once. I also think you should try to focus on a few mutants each movie to focus in on, and let the others be more highlighted as before. That with the combination of powers will make a second trilogy an easy financial powerhouse for the movie studio. And, the fans will go NUTS. Where is Emma Frost, SHIELD Agency, Nick Fury, Gambit, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Blob, Dazzler, Jubilee (I mean, with her powers actually being used...), and Psylocke (Same as Jubilee, with powers actually being used...).
Thank you for putting in Spike. That was a nice cameo. I also liked the other unique mutants. But, we needed a few more with the kinds of crowds we saw. Lots of interesting looking people, with no clear power other than wierd skin, or something like that.
All in all, this movie was AMAZING. I will be seeing it again. It's on the top of my Christmas List (the ultra deluxe platinum directer's cut/special edition dvd boxed set with TONS of extras, deleted scenes (like the last hour or two that were missing from the movie.....hint, hint...) and anything us fans would love.
Thank you for all your hard work and know we fans appreciated it. Please let the cast and crew know how much we LOVED every single minute of it. It took my breath away. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and that hasn't happened at the movies for me in a VERY long time. Glad to see we gave George Lucas a run for his money on opening night. Second only to the final Star Wars Movie EVER??? Nice work. You all deserve it. Now, quit sitting around and get to work on our next three movies already!!!
Your fan for life,
Don/Colossus Fan

I AM A X-Men Fan. "The Dark Phoenix What If..." was my first introduction to the Dark Phoenix Saga. After reading the "What If..." issue, I immediately raided my older cousins comic book collection and got seduced by the Phoenix Saga. THANK-YOU for your passion, commitment, and love for the X-Men movie series.
It was a HUGE endeavor to condense years of story arcs into one cohesive movie. So many things could have gone wrong ... and DID NOT.
Halle -
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FIGHTING FOR STORM. Ultimately, She progressed into a major player - as presented in the X-men Universe - Thank-you for hanging in there. When friends criticized Storm in the first movie, I stood up for her and actually I like the way her character arcs in the complete film trilogy.
Brett -
Thank-you for Dark Phoenix. You captured Jean's indulgence in the delicious joy of ultimate power from the Phoenix. I think you handle the intimate scenes just fine. [Note: In the comic books a lot of the interpersonal dialog happens during fight sequences - If critics want Shakespearean intimacy they should go to Shakespeare]
I've been a fan since the 70's. I LOVED THE MOVIE...GREAT JOB [to all concerned.]!!!!
THANK YOU.

Hi, This is for Bret. I'm a fan of the X-men world, I saw X3 over the weekend & in my opinion, while this movie had it's moment, it seemed to come off to me as a cut & paste movie. The whole storyline was rushed like you just wanted to get to this so,so fight scene towards the end. Potentially this could have been a great movie, but you took something great & neutered it. This movie came off alittle like the Hulk & Fantastic Four movie the actors did great with their part, but the script & direction was average. A good story is well developed & there's a logical explanation for everything. I did not get that from X3. If there's an X4, I hope that you are not attached to the project or the Wolverine & Magneto movie. Someone such as Chris Nolan,Sam Raimi & the man himself Bryan Singer should be attached to any other possible X-men movies. Oh! Zak Penn dido!

Thank you for returning Halle. No one would compare if you were replaced. You give her just the amount of attitude she was made to have.
Phoenix looked wicked. The crimson she wore was phenomenal, along with the mane of burgundy hair. Very cool. You made her quite dark.
One question though: what inspired you to make phoenix a personality rather than an entity from another place/time?

I certainly think that this is the best X-Men movie ever, and possibly my favorite of all time Mr. Ratner, I've seen the movie three times already and I've read the reviews, to me the only thing people could wish for is more, there was so much already, but it was so good, more movie would've made it even better. I'm not an overly obsessed X-Men fan, but I think with the job you've done with this one, that if you are directing, there should definitely be at least one more movie, and please tell John Powell that the soundtrack was completely amazing, the main theme is very passionate, and everything else sort of plays off of it, so bravo all around.
